Dental Abscess

An abscess is a localized infection, usually at the root of a tooth or in the gums. It needs prompt care.

Signs of an abscess

Severe, throbbing pain, swelling in your gums or face, fever, a bad taste in your mouth, and a tender bump on your gums are all common signs. If swelling is spreading rapidly or affecting your breathing or swallowing, go directly to the nearest emergency room.

Treatment

Treatment usually involves draining the infection, addressing the source (often through root canal therapy or, less commonly, extraction), and sometimes antibiotics. The goal is to clear the infection and save the tooth when possible.

Can a tooth abscess go away on its own?

No. The pain can ease temporarily if the abscess drains or the nerve dies, but the infection itself stays in the tooth or bone and keeps spreading. Feeling better is not the same as being better, so call our Orange Ave NE office at 540-342-8781 even if the ache fades.

Will antibiotics alone cure a dental abscess?

No. Antibiotics can knock the infection back and are sometimes part of treatment, but they cannot reach the source inside the tooth. Until the infected tissue is removed, the abscess tends to come back, which is why a prescription alone is never the whole fix.

When should I go to the ER instead of the dentist for an abscess?

Go straight to the hospital if swelling is spreading toward your eye or down your neck, you have trouble breathing or swallowing, or you have a high fever with confusion. Those are signs the infection is moving beyond the tooth. For anything short of that, our office treats the cause directly.

Can you treat a dental abscess if I don't have insurance?
